Why Copper?
Facts borrowed with permission from Vasanti Health How Do I Get Started?
A little back story... When I started studying Ayurveda, my teachers had me purchase a copper vessel to use for drinking water. At first I was nervous that my water would taste funny, like the way pennies smell. But I gave it a shot anyways, not fully understanding how or why, I just trusted that it was somehow more magical and sacred than drinking out of an old mug, so I gave it a shot. To my surprise, it didn't taste like pennies. To be honest, it only lasted about a week, and then the novelty wore off and I got too busy and just forgot about it. Then a few months ago, I received an email from a beautiful stranger named Mantreh Atashband. She had been following my blog for sometime and noticed that I never mentioned the medicinal value of using copper vessels for drinking water. She offered to send me one of the beautiful copper tamba cups that she sells on her charitable website, VasantiHealth.com. When the package arrived, I was blown away by the sweetness and care that went into the packaging. There was even a handwritten note from Mantreh herself! The tamba was so bright and shiny, it was not like the old dingy one I purchased at the Indian store. It was bold and beautiful and had amazing energy. Once I started using the Tamba I noticed that my water started tasting fresher, and full of life. I have been using the cup on a regular basis for over a month now, and can honestly say that I am hooked. It is such a special practice, and a wonderful way to increase mindfulness and show your self a little extra love. Cheers to your health! With love, Brittany

Hi, I wonder if water from the copper vessel may be boiled to make a cup of tea?

Just be careful if you serve hot drinks in copper vessels as it's is a great conductor and the cup and handle (if made of copper) will also get very hot

I don't think you can put boiled water in the vessels. Lots of heat and copper don't mix well. Room temperature is what's usually used. I live in a cold place too and I wrap my cup in a towel when its on the counter so the water and cup stay warm.

Thank you Julia. It was a good read. Keep in mind the publication found that 48 hours was required to produce optimal results.

True Jack. But that was water in some polluted areas. Our regular tap water would need less sitting time.

Julia, you are probably correct, however the 48 hours is directly from the abstract you provided. Laboratory not a contaminated site.

Great read. Copper really is a very beneficial metal. Did you know that copper infused water can also help heal wounds inside the body, especially in the stomach? Copper also helps combat arthritis and inflamed joints, regulates the thyroid, beats anaemia and keeps skin healthy.

It helps the digestive system perform better - Acidity, gas or simply the inability to digest certain foods is common and here is where copper comes to your rescue. Copper has properties that stimulate peristalsis, kill harmful bacteria and reduce inflammation within the stomach, making it a great remedy for ulcers, indigestion and infections.

As I know, in Ayurveda, the drinking water that filled in a copper vessel is called ‘tamara jal’. For best practice, the water need to be stored in the vessel for a minimum of 8 hours before you can consume it.

True. According to Ayurveda, water stored in a copper vessel has the ability to balance all the three doshas in your body, (vata, kapha and pitta) and it does so by positively charging the water.

As already asked above but as yet no answer .... If we were to boil the water that had been in a copper vessel overnight, would it lose its health enhancing properties?

It is great to drink water in copper vessel, but would you really advice to keep hot water in a copper glass to drink. Scientifically it is also certified that drinking water in copper glasses and vessels are effective to kill bacteria. Keep your body hydrated by having right amount of water a day. Less water drinking can cause of dehydration.

You can drink warm water in a copper cup but don't burn your hand since copper is heat conductive. Ayurvedic practice says room temperature water only.
